Your pattern

The Boulder

Right now, your nervous system is running the Boulder pattern. Here is what that means.

What you are experiencing is not laziness, lack of motivation, or brokenness but the result of a nervous system that has done something incredibly intelligent in response to too much for too long, downshifting into protection mode and taking your energy, your clarity, and your sense of aliveness with it.

The Boulder pattern means your nervous system is in dorsal vagal shutdown, which is the most ancient survival response in your biology. When the nervous system cannot fight and cannot flee, it conserves by going still and disconnecting, and for many people this feels like depression, numbness, exhaustion, or a quiet but persistent sense of going through the motions of a life that should feel fuller than it does.

This shows up as fatigue that sleep does not fix, digestion that feels slow and sluggish, emotions that feel muted or distant, and a gap between who you know yourself to be and who you can currently access. You may have been told you need more motivation, more discipline, more positivity, but motivation cannot reach a nervous system in shutdown, and what you need first is gentle, specific, bottom-up activation that builds safety and mobilization without overwhelming a system that is already protecting itself by going still.

You may also notice yourself moving toward Storm before the stillness sets in, a flash of urgency or bracing right before you go quiet again, and that too is part of this pattern rather than a separate problem, the system trying one more time to activate before it settles into rest.

Today I Practice

I Unfold At My Own Pace

Today I Practice noticing the quiet in my body and asking, gently, is this what I need in this moment? My stillness knows how to protect me, how to serve me and how to keep me safe when there is simply too much to hold. My body is doing exactly what it was designed to do: keep me safe. My nervous system can gently move from stillness to light activity. I practice inviting the smallest sparks of movement, a soft roll of my shoulders, a deep stretch through my legs, and I let my breath arrive at its own pace. I practice letting my eyes find one small thing, a texture, a colour, a ray of light, and I let myself linger there. I am worthy of unfolding gently, like renewal after a long winter. My nervous system is learning that it's safe to move from rest into activity.
